Our Filipino Society Leaders!

S. A. F. S.  OFFICERS 2024

The "Strait Area Filipino Society" (SAFS) comprises mainly Filipino members and aims to blend Filipino and Canadian cultures. This is achieved through volunteer work and organizing events to engage Filipino newcomers within the community.

SAFS has seen steady growth since its establishment, with over 138 members in the local vicinity. The society is evolving by welcoming members from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

With a focus on cultural integration, SAFS has planned various programs and events to foster unity and mutual support among its members. These initiatives play a key role in maintaining connections within the community, especially for those separated from their families in the Philippines.

SAFS has become a thriving hub for Filipino-Canadians to connect, share experiences, and create a sense of belonging in their new home. The society's inclusive approach has led to the development of programs that celebrate Filipino traditions.

Through these activities, SAFS not only preserves Filipino heritage but also introduces it to the wider community, promoting cultural diversity and understanding. Members of all backgrounds are welcomed to participate, fostering a rich tapestry of relationships and mutual respect.

As SAFS continues to grow and adapt to the changing needs of its members, it remains dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive environment where everyone can feel at home, no matter where they are in their journey. The society's commitment to unity and cultural integration serves as a beacon of hope and solidarity, bridging the gap between different communities and fostering a spirit of togetherness that enriches the fabric of society.

OUR SAFS SPIRITUAL ADVISER

Reverend (Padee) Antolin Asor

SAFS Spiritual Leader/Adviser

I am Rev. Antolin Asor.  I am a 'Padre' who arrived in Nova Scotia, in the Diocese of Antigonish, in 2014.  Hence, among Filipinos and friends my nickname is 'PADEE' (it is an endearing modified term of the Bicol word 'Padi' [priest] which is from the Spanish word 'Padre').  In Nova Scotia, it has been my second time in Canada, the first having lived and worked in Toronto from years 2000 to 2006.

As a Filipino in Cape Breton, I am connected with both the SAFS (Strait Area Filipino Society) and the FACB (Filipino Association in Cape Breton, in Sydney).  Yes, I am a minister/pastor in the Diocese and as of date I have served 8 parishes already and 4 First Nations communities, the current one, Eskasoni, the most populated Mi'kmaq Community in Canada. Added to my ministry, I have been serving as spiritual guide and unofficial Catholic chaplain to the CB Filipino Communities.  I am honoured to work here in the island.  It is with great joy to serve the Filipinos and Canadians in general here in Northeastern Nova Scotia.

Deputy Food Committee Head

Mabuhay! I am Rosamae Palmares-Wareham, my loved ones call me "CLING-CLING". I'm from the Asia's City of Love, the Heart of the Philippines, the City of Iloilo. I received my degree from Central Philippine University as Bachelor of Science in Commerce major in Management.

To give you a brief overview, I moved in Canada in March 2007, specifically in Alberta. I met my husband in Edmonton in the year 2013 and we are blessed to have two wonderful sweet boys whom we adore. Then, in 2015, we moved to Ontario. My husband and I made the decision to relocate in 2022 after discovering how serene and lovely the Island of Cape Breton is.

I am an easy going person and I enjoy spending time with my family, I am always willing to provide a helping hand especially when it comes to my Kababayans. It makes me happy and lessens my longing for my family and friends in the Philippines.

As a member of the SAFS FAMILY, I am a proud and active Deputy Food Committee Head, Events, and Performance member. A little trivia to why I truly adore my role in SAFS FAMILY; Beside the fact that "Food is Life" is my, or rather everyone's unwavering motto, Iloilo is one of the cities recognized by UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy for its culinary delights and rich culture. I grew up eating delicious savoury food that has been handed down through the generations.

Being with the SAFS Family brings me and my family great joy.

Let's enjoy and create wonderful memories!

EVENTS COMMITTEE

Glench Garcia-Villas

Head - Events Committee/Stylist/Decorator

Greetings to all!

I am Glenn Villas, also known as Glench or Glengie by many. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Jose Rizal University. My professional journey has been diverse, starting in Kuwait from 2006 to 2012, then moving to Alberta, Canada. Working in the Middle East enriched me with new perspectives, insights, and lasting connections.

In November 2015, I made the tough decision to return to the Philippines for personal and family matters. Thanks to the amazing support of the Olans (Francis and Jess), I was able to come back to Canada on August 16, 2023, and join the Tim Hortons Port Hawkesbury team. Their kindness and support made this journey possible, and I am forever grateful. As a devoted mother of three and a proud army wife, I am deeply committed to my career, always aiming for excellence with enthusiasm and determination.

Apart from work, I have a strong interest in showbiz. I delved into the entertainment industry at 17, driven by a desire to leave a mark and explore this field. Despite facing challenges, I have gained valuable lessons and meaningful connections. Meeting the talented actress Gladys Reyes was inspiring, as her talent and resilience left a lasting impact. Despite the ups and downs of my showbiz journey, I value the connections and experiences it has brought me.

I want to express my gratitude to the SAFS family for the warm welcome and sense of belonging in this exceptional organization. The dedication and passion of SAFS members are truly inspiring, and I look forward to collaborating and learning from each of you. Let's combine our creativity and enthusiasm to make each event extraordinary! I am excited to share my skills, hear your ideas, and work together to create impactful and inclusive events.

Cheers! Long Live SAFS FAMILY!

Mike Lupig

Events Committee Support

Hello, I am Michael Lupig, currently working at Tim Hortons in Aulds Cove. Saudi Arabia has been like a second home to me, having spent 16 years there as an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW). Being far from my loved ones presented its own set of challenges. As I transition into my new life in Canada, I am thankful for the opportunities that await me. Throughout this experience, my passion for Table Tennis has provided a much-needed escape and anchor. After nearly two decades abroad, I made the decision to move to Canada with the goal of reuniting with my family in the Philippines and supporting my siblings' future. This signifies a fresh beginning filled with optimism and endless possibilities, and I eagerly look forward to the journey ahead.

Being part of the Strait Area Filipino community brings me joy. To be involved in an organization that allows me to contribute to a cause; that is to serve, connecting me with individuals who share a similar drive to make a positive impact. As I step into this new phase with hope and potential, I carry with me the lessons I learned during my time in Saudi Arabia – the significance of adaptability, the rewards of hard work, and the strength of resilience. I am excited for what lies ahead and eager to discover where this path will lead me next.

Mike

Raffy Binene

Events Committee Support

Greetings!

Becoming a part of the Strait Area Filipino Society is an honour. Meeting and even rubbing elbows with esteemed members of this organization is a privilege.

Rafael B. Jose, Jr. here, a Novo Ecijano currently working at Canada's largest quick-service restaurant chain.

Prior to this latest tour of duty I served as a Purchasing & Logistics Manager in one Riyadh telecommunications company for 26 years. I previously managed a telecoms distributorship company in Manila, served as a Training Manager for yet another telecoms organization, and many years prior, was a college instructor.

Canada has so far been a gracious host -- a country with polite, strikingly well-mannered fun-loving locals. Saudi Arabia was not too shabby either. The Philippines, well, is always home and nothing is better than home. I have been privileged enough to be a resident of such beautiful countries and will always be grateful for having experienced the hospitality and kindness of people I have had the chance to meet in my journey, which hopefully is far from its finality.

On a personal note: This quinquagenarian is still looking forward to getting back into shape by hitting the gym anew if my schedule permits. Otherwise, hit me up and tag me along if you are into shooting hoops but only when the weather improves.
